How American Made is the Chevy Bolt EV?

General Motors (GM) has been boasting a lot about the new Chevy Bolt EV, but their latest press release (Chevrolet Develops Bolt EV Using Strategic Partnership, 2015)about the company's 'revolutionary' electric vehicle just confirms what many have been saying about it, that it's not really an American made vehicle. Instead, the environmentally friendly vehicle should have the label, "manufactured in America, with foreign parts."
According to the October 20, 2015 press release from Chevrolet's Warren, Michigan headquarters, the "GM & LG Blend Experience," the following parts are being supplied by the electronics manufacturer (and not made in the U.S.):
- Electric Drive Motor
- Power Invertor Module
- Battery Cells and Pack
- On Board Charger
- Electric Climate Control System Compressor
- Battery Heater
- Accessory Power Module
- High Power Distribution Module
- Instrument Cluster
- Power Line Communication Module
- Infotainment System
While it's true that last year's Made in America index found that every car sold in the U.S. is made of at least 12.5 % foreign parts, (Schaal, 2015)this information supplied by GM shows the Chevy Bolt EV is gearing up to be the most foreign made in America vehicle to date!
